"Your Synergy tuning module comes highly recommended but others have said I should get a remap instead. Please advise me which is best for my vehicle." This is a common enquiry and one we are only too happy to help with.
A remap involves the reprogramming of your engine ecu via the diagnostic socket under the dash. On most newer diesels, it cannot be done this way meaning that the ecu has to be removed and opened. Even this method isn't possible on many vehicles and prising open the sealed ecu on a vehicle still under warranty is not a good idea. (The ecu is also often secured by anti tamper bolts that must be drilled out to remove it.)
PLEASE CHECK WHEN HAVING A REMAP WHETHER THE ECU IS GOING TO BE REMOVED AND OPENED. Some tuning companies will not tell you, which may have warranty implications in the future.
On the other hand, our tuning products are 100% plug-in (with a few exceptions) so you can fit one yourself and equally important, remove it for servicing or warranty work if your vehicle needs it and of course transfer it to your next vehicle.
WHICH IS BEST? As our colleagues at Energy Tuning Ltd install both, they are perhaps uniquely impartial and in their experience, our tuning boxes work better for most drivers because they work especially well from around 1500rpm or lower - in the rev range used most of the time.
On the other hand, many remaps have more effect at higher rpm and progressively less at mid to low rpm and so are more attractive to the 'sporty' driver who is used to driving a petrol engined vehicle.
ADJUSTABILITY: You can also adjust the performance and transfer or sell the tuning box, neither being possible with a remap.
TRANSFERABILITY: Don't forget another important point - our modules can be transferred to your next vehicle at little cost, a remap cannot.
Finally, for the ultimate performance you can combine a remap with one of our tuning boxes. The box amplifies the effect of the remap simply because the higher injection pressure means even more fuel is injected when the injectors open, and opening them for longer is how the remap works.
For example a Vauxhall 1.9L 8v 120bhp engine produced 178bhp and 400nm of torque with both and a Freelander TD4 2L 112bhp engine produced 171bhp with both (150 with either alone)
SCAREMONGERING BY REMAPPERS ON FORUMS.
On some forums unprofessional remappers try to drum up sales by putting you off a Synergy with scaremongering, psuedoscience & technobabble. They often use phrases such as 'invisible to insurance companies', or 'insurance friendly', as an additional benefit, implying that there is no need to inform your insurers. The fact is they can interrogate the ecu and compare it with a standard one should they have reason to suspect undeclared mods. (which will be the case in the event of a major claim - eg your 75 writes off a Ferrari or causes a multiple pile up)
They claim the Synergy causes overfuelling (yet it doesn't cause smoke and improves the mpg), and causes problems with the injection system, whilst failing to admit that ANY tuning will increase the load on this: more power requires more fuel so the injection pump and injectors will be working harder.
Finally, the Synergy is selling as fast as ever in spite of their best efforts to get you have a remap instead. Don't forget the Synergy is transferable to other vehicles for under £40, depending on the vehicle, a remap is not.
We simply would not sell a product we felt was going to cause our customers reliability problems. We'd simply be another remapping company....
CONCERNED ABOUT TUNING YOUR OLDER VEHICLE?
If your prised vehicle is getting on a bit, then you can request we limit the power increase, or alternatively fit a dash switch. This is a popular option since the mpg is normally much better than standard but still with a respectable power increase in one of the eco settings, but flick the switch and the fully monty is available.
So the extra stress on the engine, fuel system and turbo is absolutely minimal and under your full control.
